Dark Places Trailer Has Charlize Theron Solving A Horrific Mystery

Late last year, author Gillian Flynn found her work on the big screen for the first time thanks to David Fincher's adaptation of her novel Gone Girl. Now we're already seeing a trailer for the second film based on one of her books - and it looks pretty damn creepy. Check out the international trailer for Dark Places below:

Based on the novel of the same name, Dark Places stars Charlize Theron as Libby Day, a woman who has spent years psychologically scarred after witnessing the slaughter of her mother and sisters at a young age. At the time, it was believed that the murders were the work of a Satanic cult that Libby's brother (Corey Stoll) was a part of, and as a young girl Libby identified him in court. Twenty-five years later, that accusation is called into question. Libby is contacted by a group of true crime fanatics who call themselves The Kill Club, and they inform her that they believe her brother is innocent. A search for truth begins, but it requires the protagonist to bring back some horrific memories.

The film doesn't quite have the cache that comes with having a director like David Fincher aboard - filmmaker Gilles Paquet-Brenner serving that role on the movie - but it makes up for lack of clout in that department by having one hell of a cast. In addition to the aforementioned Charlize Theron and Corey Stoll, you'll notice watching this trailer that the ensemble also includes Christian Hendricks, Chloe Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Drea de Matteo and talented up-and-comer Tye Sheridan. It's pretty much guaranteed that every scene in this film will have at least one stellar actor on the screen.

Of course, great actors don't necessarily translate to good movie - but this one does have me intrigued. This doesn't exactly look like its going to be pleasant to watch - it feels like it's on the mood level of Patty Jenkins' Monster - but it could also be an intriguing story driven by a solid mystery. It's already been proven that Gillian Flynn's work adapts well for the big screen, so we can hope that this film will make her two-for-two.

But while you may be dazzled by the cast and this dingy, grimy trailer, it's still unclear at this point exactly when Dark Places will be coming to theaters hear in the United States. The origins of this adaptation date all the way back to 2012 - when Amy Adams was attached to star - and the project went through production in late 2013, but there has not yet been any news about when the movie will be getting an American release. The film will be getting released in multiple European countries next month - including France, Norway, Denmark, and Greece, but U.S. distributor A24 has not yet put it on the release calendar.
