Assassin’s Creed just added to it’s already fantastic cast. Two of the lead characters just got fathers to help shepherd them in the ways of that deadly, secretive world. Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson have both joined the production. Gleeson will play Michael Fassbender’s father, while Irons is parenting Marion Cotillard.

According to Deadline, the actors just signed on while production is already under way. Filming is taking place in Malta, London and Spain.

The Assassin’s Creed brand is a mighty big one. The video game series, which began in 2007, has already spawned 14 sequels with a fifteenth planned for release before too long. The series is so popular that games have been release at a rate of one or two a year, every year, since the first game became a smash hit.

The games cover different time periods in world history. Current series sections have focused on the Third Crusade, the Renaissance, the Colonial era, the French Revolution, Imperial China and Victorian England, with the next episode focusing on the Sikh Empire in India. Following the dangerous, action-packed adventures of members of the Assassin Brotherhood across time, the UbiSoft game allows players to take on the role of various deadly warriors as they traverse the globe to make their mysterious society proud by (literally) hitting their targets in the deadliest ways possible.

Michael Fassbender’s character, Callum, was created just for the film. The other characters are said to be new additions to the series as well, with the filmmakers wanting to use the movies to bring different characters into the world, possibly to make sure there were no (or fewer, anyway) continuity issues to contend with compared to the many, many games in the series.

The company behind the film, 20th Century Fox finally, after months of speculation, released an official plot description last month. Callum is a descendant of an Assassin named Aguilar, and, through the use of "revolutionary technology", has come to experience Aguilar’s escapades in 15th century Spain. Callum will then use his newfound skills and knowledge to fight the Brotherhood in a modern setting. Though, with the uniform Michael Fassbender will be donning in the movie, I can’t really see how he’s going to blend in, even in near total darkness, with, you know, anyone, anywhere. Not that it matters, though, since he looks so totally freakin’ cool.

I don’t really play major, kill ’em and watch ‘em bleed video games, but just hearing more about the plans for the film and the history of the property makes we want to join the cult of Assassin’s Creed. As with most of these types of games, part of the fun is roaming around wrecking havoc on the bad guys of the world (or becoming them) so we can release all that pent up aggression toward the woman who cut us off in traffic or the boss who gives us dirty looks when we leave work on time. With a cast this increasingly strong, Assassin’s Creed is sure to give a lot of movie fans the same, hard to resist, liberation.
