Though lately he has become known for serious dramatic roles and for making more family friendly movies, Eddie Murphy made his bones being as raunchy and raw as anyone on the stand up stage. This translated to his early films like 48 Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places, and though he’s gotten away from that, one of his upcoming projects may be as foul-mouthed as some of us fondly recall, but then again, it may not.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television, super producer Brian Grazer that seemingly announced he and Murphy are going to team up with Netflix for what could be a triumphant return to the hallowed ground of the legendary comedian’s raunchier days. Grazer said:
I’m gonna do a tour de force movie that’s cinema verite with Eddie Murphy being as raw as he can be.
That seems pretty self explanatory, right? There aren’t any specifics or details to speak of, but it was enough to get tons of people out there rather excited. After all, many of us grew up on Eddie Murphy cursing a blue streak and saying things that shocked and warped and blew our fragile little minds. What’s not to love? The Oscar-winning producers words also make it sound like this is definitely going to happen, and likely very soon.
But Deadline pumped the brakes on this one, and pumped the brakes on it hard. Shortly after this news started making the rounds, the trade posted another, contrary article. According to their source, who they claim is an insider close to the project, it is too early in the going to announce this movie, saying that no details, no contracts, and none of the building blocks are even in place at this moment.
From this standpoint, it sounds like there is something like in the works, a project that could star Eddie Murphy in a foul-mouthed explosion, but that it is very, very early in the process. Perhaps Brian Grazer is simply so excited by the prospect that he couldn’t help but blurt it out at the slightest provocation, or maybe he hopes that by saying this out loud, it will get a public push behind it and perhaps speed things along.
Who knows at this point, but this idea is certainly one that piqued the interest of a great number of fans. One thing is clear, however: Grazer’s enthusiasm. And if the guy behind everything from Kindergarten Cop to Apollo 13 can’t make it happen, who can? He also has a working relationship with Netflix that could come into play, as Arrested Development, which he produced, was resurrected by the streaming giant for a fourth season, and there has been talk of another eventually.
Right now this is kind of a he-said-she-said situation, and we don’t know how it will all work out. One thing is certain, though, you can bet your ass that Eddie Murphy making a raunchy new movie is something we’ll be keeping an eye on.
