PlanetSide 2 Will Have A Cash Shop, But Pay-To-Win Not An Option

In a recent interview it has been confirmed that PlanetSide 2 will have certain “free” aspects about it and that the cash shop will play a pretty big role in the way microtransactions are handled. However, if you’re hoping to out-pay the competition to get stronger, you might want to find another game to play.

PlanetSide Universe put up a Q&A they had with SOE CEO, John Smedley, at the Fan Faire 2011 event. Smedley had some interesting things to say in regards to the cash shop for the upcoming PlanetSide 2

There will be a cash shop for the game however the goal is not to sell power. For example we would sell things like customization because we would like there to be a massive amount of ways to customize your characters. So people could recognize you or your outfit out of a group. We will not sell a more powerful gun or vehicle.

Well that’s a relief. It also means that gamers will actually have to work for the good stuff. I do, however, like the idea of paying for some extra customization goodies from out of the cash shop…it never hurts to pay to look like a pimp.

If SOE plays their cards right then they could come out on top of the three-way tangle between FireFall, Tribes: Ascend and PlanetSide 2. The game is basically being designed as an open-world free-for-all with territory control and resource management hanging in the balance.

Not too long ago Sony Online Entertainment announced that PlanetSide 2 was on the way and that it would be bigger and better this time around with persistence, vehicle customization, revamped mission system and free-form class evolution.

You can check out the full, albeit brief, interview with John Smedley over at the Official PlanetSide Universe Website.
