Luke Cage Trailer Made Available To Netflix Subscribers

Today is a pretty huge day for Marvel fans who can’t get enough of the company’s partnership with Netflix, as we’re finally getting our eyes and ears on the Punisher-filled Season 2 of Daredevil. But that’s not the only new comic book footage the streaming giant unleashed today, as the very first teaser for the upcoming Luke Cage has arrived, and it’s a hoot. Although, unfortunately, it’s only for Netflix subscribers right now and isn’t officially available anywhere else.

For those who don’t have access to it, what are you doing? Get Netflix and start watching Daredevil ASAP! Ahem, I mean, for those who can’t watch, we can go over it here. The teaser isn’t a long and involved one, and basically looks like a short scene from an episode in which Luke Cage stands around almost bored while he serves as target practice for some lowlifes who clearly aren’t familiar with the indestructible New Yorker. I can’t help but think that every time someone in a movie shoots at a bulletproof character, they immediately fall back on the adage “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” before uselessly wasting more bullets.

It’s an enjoyable bit, short as it is, and it clues viewers in on the fact that while Luke will not immediately be viewed as a hero, he's also not someone that bad guys want to work with. And he’s not mauling anyone, so he’s clearly keeping up with the mostly virtuous outlook that he had when we first got to know him in Jessica Jones Season 1. At least, during the parts of that show where he wasn’t having his mind manipulated.

The “biggest” moment in the teaser is Luke popping off a quick quip to the trigger-happy dinks in front of him, which is a good sign that this show could have more lighter moments than its streaming successors. Not that Jessica and Matt (and Foggy) don’t get some good one-liners out. In any case, here’s how that went.

While that might just sound like a throwaway line, the fact that it was specifically about getting new clothes could be a hint that we’ll get to see Luke in his signature comic book costume, a detail that hasn’t been confirmed or denied yet. No better way to cut down on a clothing bill than to go out into danger wearing something special that won’t go to shit like stuff you’d buy at a mall. I think Matt Murdock knows a guy who knows something about costumes.

Luke Cage will focus on the titular hero and his music-tinged relocation to Harlem, where the character gets mixed up in a whole new batch of problems, including Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Dillard and Mahershala Ali’s Cottonmouth Stokes. We can expect to see Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple as the link between all these shows, but no other series-crossing cameos have been announced.

To check the trailer out in its entirety, head to the show’s page on Netflix. But remember to have indestructible patience, as we’re not going to get up close and personal with Luke Cage until Season 1 debuts in its entirety on Netflix on Friday, September 30.
