Dave Grohl Admits Foo Fighters Is A Terrible Band Name

As Austin’s famed festival South by Southwest has grown, its keynote speakers have become more prominent names. This year, Foo Fighters and Sound City Players frontman Dave Grohl took on the honors of being the keynote speaker and he had several fervent things to say, as well as a few amusing moments in the speech.

First and foremost, Grohl knows that coming up with a good band name is one of the hardest parts of making it in music, and he openly admits the Foo Fighters don’t really have the goods.

"Finding a good band name is still the hardest fucking part...Foo Fighters is the stupidest fucking name."

The man’s 45-minute speech had plenty of honest and open moments, as well, including an enthusiastic response to Psy’s epic music and dance moment with “Gangnam Style.” According to the NY Times, the 44-year-old says that taking command of practicing and your role in music and taking your voice wherever it may lead you is what will create opportunities, as well as good music.

“There is no right or wrong. There is only your voice, your voice screaming through an old recording console, singing from a laptop, echoing from a street corner, a cello, a turntable, a guitar.”

Grohl’s always been a pretty passionate guy, even when he’s simply filling in for Chelsea Handler on Chelsea Lately and it’s awesome he’s gotten the chance to give a speech with so many inspiring moments. Grohl happens to be at SXSW promoting his Sound City documentary and if you get the chance to see it in the coming months, I would give it a shot.
