Jay-Z’s partnership with Samsung Mobile is really paying off. Not only did the company offer to pay up in order to give users free copies, the company is also paying for some advertising promotion for Jay-Z’s latest, which will be called Magna Carta Holy Grail. In the newest of these promotions, Jay-Z gets in-depth and emotional when speaking about what it means to him to be a father to his first child, a little girl named Blue Ivy who was born in 2012. For a man who comes across as super confident, his words are a little surprising.
“We still marvel at her. It’s most obvious on a song called “Jay-Z Blue.” And it deals with, like, you know, my Pop left when I was young, so he didn’t teach me how to be a man. You know, how to raise a child or treat a woman. So, of course, my karma, the two things I need, I don't have. And I have a daughter. It’s the paranoia of not being a great dad.”
It’s only natural that Jay-Z would want to talk about being a parent to his daughter on the album. After all, parenthood is already a relevant topic for any singer, musician, or rapper, but Blue Ivy’s birth also happened to be big news for fans of the couple in the United States and across the world. Jay-Z already released a song about his little daughter just two days after her birth, but now that she is getting bigger, there are plenty of new topics for the rapper to muse about.
Jay-Z is talking to Rick Rubin in the video about “Jay-Z Blue,” and the moment seems really intimate and especially relevant right now, considering the rapper’s wife, Beyonce, has stated numerous times that she wants more children and new pregnancy rumors have abounded in recent months. Those rumors may not have ended up being true, but Jay-Z candidness about parenting is still a topic that people are clearly interested in.
The new video isn’t the first time Jay-Z has voiced his thoughts on parenting and how he had to pick life lessons up from his mom in lieu of having a father figure around. Jay-Z has talked about these topics during a Master Class interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2012.
"I imagine I'll take things I learned from my mom and things I've learned from raising my nephews and apply that. Then at the end of the day, I just know I'll probably have the worst, spoiled little kid ever."
Jay-Z may have his worries, but half of being a good parent is showing up and putting in effort and the other half is improvisation. As long as Jay-Z is as invested as he seems to be in the video, I get the feeling the two parents will be just fine.
