So, Scotty Smalls Apparently Headbutted A Cop

Tom Guiry, better known as the dude who played Scotty Smalls in the beloved children’s movie The Sandlot, was arrested inside Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas for allegedly headbutting a cop right in the face. Details are still a little fuzzy on exactly what happened, but not surprisingly, all involved seem to agree alcohol (not smores) was a factor.

According to TMZ, Guiry was getting ready to get on a flight over the weekend when an employee of United Airlines decided he was too intoxicated to get on the plane. A nearby airport police officer was enlisted to let the actor know. Informing someone they won’t be allowed to fly is always a difficult proposition, but this conversation wound up going a lot worse than expected. Guiry was informed he could choose between sleeping it off in the drunk tank or being formally arrested for public intoxication. Unfortunately, he allegedly chose option C: get violent.

After yelling at the cop for awhile, Guiry allegedly went for a roundhouse kick to the face. The cop was able to get out of the way, but Smalls reportedly followed up the first attempt with a headbutt to the face that actually connected. At this point, he may well have thought he was winning, but it was all down hill from there. The unidentified officer quickly wrapped Guiry up, aggressively took him to the ground and slapped the handcuffs on. He was promptly taken to the station and charged with felony assault of a police officer, which, if you’re keeping score at home, is far worse way to spend a hot Summer afternoon than going to the pool…

Following a brief incarceration, Guiry was able to post $5,000 bail and leave the police station. There’s no word on whether he promptly headed back to the airport and tried to take another flight or whether he went somewhere to sleep it off. Considering we haven’t heard anything since the arrest, I think it’s probably safe to say wherever he went, he behaved appropriately. Or was attacked by the beast and will never be heard from again.

There’s a fine line between making a mistake and becoming yet another grown-up child star that’s an absolute mess. Right now, Guiry deserves the benefit of the doubt that he had a really rough day and made the worst decision of his entire life. If this behavior continues, however, he’s going to wind up blowing his chance with Wendy Peffercorn and becoming a punchline related to one of the most loveable movies for kids ever made.
