Watch A Cat Protect A Toddler Being Attacked By A Dog

Even by cat-video standards, this one is impressive, though it's also disturbing. A little boy is playing in his driveway when a dog shows up and attacks him. The video shows the dog literally dragging the kid until a cat jumps into the frame, launches itself at the dog and knocks it backward. The cat then runs the dog off the property, while the child's mother comes to his aid.

YouTube user Roger Triantafilo shared the above video, which is dated yesterday (May 13, 2014) and posted today, along with this explanation for the mother running off near the end of the video, and the bite photos:

My cat defends my son during a vicious dog attack and runs the dog off before he can do additional damage. Thankfully, my son is fine!Question: Why did the mom run away?Answer: After checking his wounds she made sure the dog did not return for a second attempt. The owners were there also and she was bit by the dog as she tried to pin him in his yard. The owners did get control of the dog and secured him in which she immediately returned to attending to our son. I did not include that video because it was not so much about the dog but about the cats actions. ?

It's hard to know what to make about the dog's aggression or why it attacked the child for no apparent reason. As both a cat owner and a dog owner, I see this as a pretty horrifying situation for the owner of this dog. But the cat's rescue efforts are most definitely impressive, as it seems pretty clear that the cat was protecting the child.

I doubt cats would make very good rescue animals in general, as most house cats, in my experience, only ever do what they feel like doing and aren't especially responsive to commands. But they can be loyal and lovable pets. Also smart, fast and protective, as evidenced by the feline in this video, who saved this child from further injury.
