Everybody has that one person that got away: the love of their lives who somehow just didn't work out. Recently, Burt Reynolds admitted that the very woman who fits this description in his life is none other than former girlfriend / co-star, Sally Field.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Smokey And The Bandit star admitted that out of all the regrets in his life, one of the greatest was letting his relationship with Field deteriorate, and eventually end, in the 1980's. Reynolds lamented:
I miss her terribly... even now, it’s hard on me. I don’t know why I was so stupid. Men are like that, you know. You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.
The interview was part of a promotional campaign to plug Burt Reynolds' upcoming autobiography, “But Enough About Me,” and judging from the rest of the interview, which you can read here, the actor has entered a period of massive self-reflection. Part of that reflection is obviously reviewing the five year period where he and Field were as inseparable off screen as they were on. The two split up at the end of that five year period, and that break up was nasty enough that they allegedly didn't talk for two decades.
This apparently isn't the case anymore, at least that's if the trades are to be believed. What can be said though, is that Sally Field doesn't seem to hold a grudge, or at the very least knows better than to give the press any ammunition when it comes to possibly re-igniting the story of their failed relationship. Field was reached for comment by People magazine, and she responded with the following rebuttal:
I have no response, really, and any response I would have would belong to him.
The relationship, as well as the partnership, between Burt Reynolds and Sally Field in the 80's was a beautiful thing when it existed. Both displayed an extremely high amount of chemistry together, especially throughout their time in the Smokey And The Bandit franchise, and it would be wonderful if the two of them could somehow partner up again in the movie industry. With the burgeoning market of independent films aimed at a more mature audience, it's a surprise that this news hasn't spurred an offer for the two to reunite on screen, and rake in a quiet windfall for an upstart distributor.
