Derek Jeter is trading in baseballs for binkies. The superstar athlete's wife Hannah Jeter announced on Monday morning that they are expecting their first child, and it's a girl!
In a personal essay on The Players' Tribune about her and Derek Jeter's relationship, Hannah Jeter broke the big baby news. This will be the first baby for both of the Jeters, and Hannah included an adorable picture of her husband holding a bundle of pink balloons to share that their firstborn was going to be a little girl.
And apparently the baby's sex isn't the only thing that the couple already has an idea of --- Hannah Jeter also wrote that Derek is already dead-set on a name for their new little bundle of joy. Although the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition model wouldn't share what the name actually was, Hannah wrote that her husband has already begun referring to her baby bump in that name. But Hannah admits that she is still mulling it over, and nothing is final yet.
Though the pregnancy is obviously a joyous occasion for the couple, Hannah Jeter does admit there's a bit of bittersweetness involved, knowing that her daughter will never really know Derek Jeter as the baseball icon he has become. Since Jeter retired from the sport in 2014, Hannah writes that it's a bit sad to think that although her daughter and possible future children will get to see videos of their dad as a baseball superstar, they won't get to actually see him in action in real life like she got to.
I feel some sadness --- and Derek must as well --- thinking about how our children will never get to experience that time in his life. We can show them videos, and photos, and memorabilia --- I already can't wait to show them footage of that last night at the Stadium. But I know it won't be quite the same. I'll tell them myself: You had to be there.
But that's just one small sour thought among thousands of joyful feelings!
Derek and Hannah Jeter have been married for about half a year now. They announced their engagement in 2015 and wed in Napa Valley in July of 2016. It was the first marriage for both Hannah and Derek, which isn't very shocking for Hannah (whose maiden name is Davis), given that the model was 26 at the time. Derek Jeter, however, had made a name for himself as baseball's most eligible bachelor throughout his decade with the New York Yankees. He dated numerous high-profile actress, models, and singers like Mariah Carey, Jessica Biel, and Minka Kelly, which kept him a regular on the cover of the tabloids.
But since he met Hannah, Derek Jeter has fully settled into the life of a devoted husband, and now a father as well. Now that's a real home run.
