Lacking the credibility, pomp and circumstance of the Oscar’s or even the Emmy’s, the Grammy Awards are the most meaningful in a long list of meaningless music award shows. The winners are rarely the best or even most culturally relevant, but there’s something to be said for the absolute chaos. Sean Penn is going to win Best Actor for Milk. Slumdog Millionaire is going to win Best Picture, and Heath Ledger will be the first actor since Peter Finch to win posthumously. I haven’t the slightest idea who’ll take home Record Of The Year. It’ll probably be Winger despite the minor handicap of not being on the ballot.
Still when faced with the choice of ignoring a semi-glamorous event like this or embracing it with an elitist level of detached irony, the latter is always the correct solution. So, put on your angry eyes and get February’s cattiness quota out in one night. It’s the 2009 Grammy Awards. Follow along with my Live Updated Commentary on the event below. And for a complete, up to the minute list of all the winners as they happen, scroll all the way to the bottom of this page or click here.
Mack Rawden: U2 kicks off the show. The lyrics are popping up on a screen behind Bono and the Edge. Great. Thank God the messages behind their moralistic pop are being vociferously shoved down my throat.
Mack Rawden: Whitney Houston is here to present the Grammy for best R&B Performance.
Mack Rawden: Whitney wants to acknowledge Clive Davis. Thankfully she made it all too dramatic. She’s definitely on a poison cocktail of Trimspa and Prozac tonight. And the Grammy for Best R&B Album goes to Jennifer Hudson.
Mack Rawden: The Rock sighting. He’s giving some love to Coldplay and Carrie Underwood. Isn’t that special. I miss the people’s elbow.
[Comment From Katey] They should've let Bobby and Whitney present it together... that would make it more interesting,
[Comment From Brian] Hey wait, he didn't mention Radiohead... aren't they performing??
Mack Rawden: Justin Timberlake is talking about Al Green, which morphs into a performance by Boyz II Men and Al Green.
Mack Rawden: Is it racist to say Justin Timberlake is the best dancer on stage which is impressive since he's surrounded by black people?
[Comment From masterthes] not at all mack
Mack Rawden: Coldplay is performing. Chris Martin is not Elton John, and he doesn't work the army jacket as well as Lindsey from Freaks And Geeks.
[Comment From Brian] and now the performance is ruined....
[Comment From Brian] nvm
Mack Rawden: This is the exercise portion of the performance.
Mack Rawden: Keith Urban follows up Coldplay with an introduction of Carrie Underwood. She should stop singing in favor of making more gossipy comments about Jessica Simpson.
Mack Rawden: Carrie Underwood is too hot. It's almost not fair.
Mack Rawden: Brenda Lee is wildly underrated. I'm going to listen to her version of "Stupid Cupid" during the next commercial break.
Mack Rawden: Sheryl Crow and LeAnn Rimes are announcing the nominees for Country Performance. The Grammy goes to Sugarland for "Stay".
[Comment From Guest] so any signs of Green Day or Blink-182 yet? Excited to find out what their big surprise is
Mack Rawden: Al Green makes his second appearance of the night.
Mack Rawden: And the Grammy for Song Of The Year goes to Coldplay. Have a group of people ever benefitted more from our culture's bad taste in music? Sgt Pepper joke. That was actually funny.
Mack Rawden: Kid Rock is performing. His drummer is cool. I wonder if she whooped some ass in that Waffle House fight.
Mack Rawden: Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus together at last like Sonny and Cher or sausage gravy and ham.
[Comment From Solomon, MN] So far so good, except nothing. By the way, is it true that there are Ethiopian nominees?
Mack Rawden: There are two Ethiopian-Americans nominated.
[Comment From kelly] It's Miley!
[Comment From Ray] heh, you guys are my eyes and ears, I cant see the show here at work
Mack Rawden: Taylor and Miley are announcing the nominees for best Pop Collaberation with Vocals. The winners are Robert Plant and Allison Krause, not my two favorite people in the world for reasons I won't get into but involve personal vendettas.
[Comment From kelly] Jennifer Hudson looks amazing! Sounds amazing too!
Mack Rawden: Jennifer Hudson has on an expensive push-up bra.
[Comment From Ray] How can you tell it's expensive? lol
Mack Rawden: Because a bra from TJ Max can't do that.
[Comment From Ray] hahaha
[Comment From kelly] ohhh she's crying
Mack Rawden: I'm proud to say I voted for Jennifer Hudson during the Wild Card Round of her American Idol season. She has a stunning voice.
Mack Rawden: Well, I'm as proud as someone can be who bothers voting for American Idol.
[Comment From kelly] Yeah she does.
[Comment From Ray] Oh I forgot thats where she's from.. I dont watch Idol
[Comment From kelly] Yeah she's like Kelly Clarkson in that you sometimes have to remind yourself that she got her start on Idol.
Mack Rawden: Jennifer Hudson finished 7th on the 3rd season of Idol.
[Comment From Ray] Lol, My GF loves Kelly, So I get reminded all the time
Mack Rawden: Why is the chick from CSI presenting with Jason Mraz?
[Comment From Ray] lol beats me
Mack Rawden: Nevermind. They're introducing the Jonas Brothers who are playing with Stevie Wonder.
[Comment From kelly] Jonas brothers and stevie wonder?!
Mack Rawden: How do they come up with these pairings? I bet they draw straws like in Clue.
[Comment From Ray] What?!?
[Comment From Ray] well, like a few years back, Madona and Gorillaz?
[Comment From kelly] Yeah they do this a lot. Weird pairings so us old people wont change the channel when the tween music comes on.
Mack Rawden: That is a fascinating hypothesis.
[Comment From Ray] lol makes sense
[Comment From you] alicia keys and frank sinatra
[Comment From mikey mike] when do they give out best rock record?
[Comment From kelly] They're rocking out to Supersition now
Mack Rawden: Stevie Wonder approving of the Jonas Brothers singing Superstition is a little bizarre to comprehend.
Mack Rawden: And I haven't the slightest idea when the best rock record will be given out. Unfortunately, the Grammy people didn't let me program the show.
[Comment From kelly] blink 182!!!
[Comment From Ray] yeah they were tight lipped on alot of things... Im interested in seeing Green Day and Blink-182 presenting
[Comment From kelly] blink 182 will be playing together again!
[Comment From Ray] OOOH YOU GUYS GOTTA TELL ME WHATS GOING ON
Mack Rawden: Blink 182 is apparently a band again.
Mack Rawden: They're introducing best rock album.
[Comment From kelly] Rock album right now
[Comment From Ray] WOW...
Mack Rawden: Coldplay wins Best Rock Album.
[Comment From kelly] and the grammy goes to cold play
Mack Rawden: Tune in later when Coldplay wins the dog catcher election and two Adult Video Awards.
[Comment From Ray] Wow, now when they get sued things are going to get interesting
[Comment From mikey mike] this is great....I am at HQ in Afghanistan right now for US Cen Com
[Comment From mikey mike] thanks for these updates
[Comment From Ray] So let me get this straight.. Blink 182 announced being back together?
Mack Rawden: Blink 182 came out together, made a joke about the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder being back together and then announced the nominees.
[Comment From Min] they are not going to be sued
[Comment From kelly] yes
[Comment From kelly] Blink 182 announced that they're getting back together as a band just before they presented
[Comment From kelly] or was that a joke... mack?
Mack Rawden: There have been rumors about Blink 182 reuniting for almost a month now. Apparently, they started talking again after Travis' accident.
[Comment From Ray] I don't know, but i've been reading that they veeb getting back together... Yeah I saw that on nimrodstreet.com
[Comment From kelly] Yeah and didn't they just confirm it or did I hear that wrong?
Mack Rawden: The band is performing with the USC marching band.
Mack Rawden: Is this marching band cooler than performing with an orchestra?
[Comment From Guest] did they do the rap awrds yet?
[Comment From Katey] Marching bands > orchestras, always
[Comment From Katey] My brother went to a Phish concert once where an entire marching band climbed out of a VW bug playing "Jungle Boogie." That's the only time I've ever wished I went to a Phish concert.
Mack Rawden: Samuel L Jackson once again proves there's nothing he won't agree to.
Mack Rawden: Gotta love Samuel L Jackson.
[Comment From kelly] I love justin timberlake.
Mack Rawden: T.I. is performing now, him and his ridiculous hat.
Mack Rawden: Anyone planning on watching his new MTV Show?
Who had the worst hat? T.I.
( 50% )
( 50% )
[Comment From Ray] lol I havent been able to see it so I wont vote... what did samuel L jackson agree to?
Mack Rawden: Ohh, he came out and introduced T.I. He'll just do any movie, any Award Show, anything with a free buffet.
[Comment From Ray] oh lol
Mack Rawden: Thank God we took time to honor our President.
Mack Rawden: Someone should snap a photo of this guy and give it to Peter Saarsgard in Garden State to replace his missing Wolf Blitzer card.
[Comment From Josh] He's not my president. I voted for the other Die Hard villain.
[Comment From Ray] Cause Obama is important to music and all
[Comment From Ray] he's only my president cause I'm american...
Mack Rawden: The Four Tops just got a lifetime achievement award.
Mack Rawden: Jamie Foxx appearance. I hope this will be better than The Soloist.
[Comment From kelly] reach out......!!!!
Mack Rawden: Jamie Foxx should keep to acting.
Mack Rawden: Gotta love the Barbershop Quartet footwork.
[Comment From Barney Stimpleton] Jamie Foxx is a decent singer
Mack Rawden: He's not bad. He's just better at acting.
[Comment From Barney Stimpleton] yea he was good in Booty Call
Mack Rawden: Was that serious?
[Comment From Barney Stimpleton] sarcasm
Mack Rawden: Okay, then he was also good on In Living Color.
[Comment From Barney Stimpleton] I cant believe tha carter 3 got nominated for album of the year
Mack Rawden: Not even the best Neil.
Mack Rawden: There is a lot of touching going on in this song.
Mack Rawden: They're doing a nice little memorial to those who died in the last year; wish they had longer to spend on the likes of Eartha Kitt and George Carlin, etc.
Mack Rawden: I'd forgotten Neil Aspinall died.
What do you want to win for Album of the Year? Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Raising Sand
( 0% )
Coldplay, Viva La Vida
( 25% )
Ne-Yo, Year Of The Gentleman
( 0% )
Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III
( 0% )

( 75% )
Mack Rawden: If only John Mayer would stick to covers...
Mack Rawden: Gary Sinise speaking of musical gardens of Eden, aka Hurricane Katrina.
[Comment From Josh] Gary Sinese introducing Lil' Wayne? Weird.
Mack Rawden: Agreed, I'm surprised his overly large ego didn't insist he introduce himself.
Mack Rawden: Remember when he proclaimed himself the "best rapper alive."
Mack Rawden: Will. I. Am. and T-Payne are also wearing ridiculous hats.
Mack Rawden: The Grammy for best rap album went to Lil' Wayne. Shocker.
[Comment From Josh] Too bad they didn't make the poll.
Mack Rawden: Yeah, between the two of them, I think they could have competed with Outkast for the most ridiculous costume suits ever.
Mack Rawden: Well, unless David Byrne is brought up.
Josh: Jumping in for Mack who had an emergency. Don't worry, it's all part of the show.
Josh: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on stage performing.
Josh: Their guitarist looks like Doctor Who after a triple bypass.
Josh: Green Day on stage to present the award for Best Album!
Josh: But first we have to sit through producer of the year. Surprise: It's Rick Ruben.
Josh: Here it comes, Album of the Year. Can anyone stop Lil' Wayne?
Josh: And the Grammy for Album of the Year goes to... Raising Sand! Robert Plant and Alison Krauss!
Josh: Robert Plant to the mic. He's bewildered. Thinks he may have sold out, but feels it's a good way to spend a Sunday.
Josh: Heart attack Doctor Who to the mic, they're drowning him out with music.
Josh: Stevie Wonder to wrap things up during the credits. Thanks for tuning in to our Grammy Live Blog! See you next year... or in just a few weeks for our extensive, prize-laden, live blog of the Academy Awards.
