Alan Ball Calls Sarah Palin IrresponsibleAuthor: Katey Rich

It's less than two months before the Presidential election, and that means it's time for everyone and their grandma to start weighing in on the candidates. Alan Ball, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and creator of Six Feet Under, had a thing or two to say about Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin at today's junket for Towelhead, his feature directorial debut that comes out this Friday.
Talking about the movie's treatment of teenage sexuality, in which 13-year-olds have sex without it ruining their lives, Ball said, "I think sex is a natural part of life, and I think teenagers especially have esx. I think to pretend that they don't is irresponsible. To pretend that it's going to ruin their life, or they're not capable of being responsible about it, is stupid." After that, things got political. "I'm not going to mention any names, but if you go through your life advocating abstinence-only sex education, and your daughter turns up pregnant, hello! You did not do your job, and somebody should call you on it." The journalists in the room, of course, begged him to name names, and Ball complied: "Sarah Palin! What the hell." Not that it comes to anyone's surprise that Ball isn't exactly a card-carrying Republican, but it's kind of nice to see a public figure come right out and call politicians on their nonsense. Check in tomorrow for more of our interview with Ball, including how he helped Dark Knight star Aaron Eckhart get in the head of a pedophile, and why he stuck with such a provocative, controversial title for his directing debut. |
