Knocked Up director Judd Apatow has topped a new list of the smartest people in Hollywood.

The moviemaker beat fellow directors Steven Spielberg and James Cameron to claim the top spot on the new Entertainment Weekly magazine list.

The smartest actor on the countdown is Will Smith at five and Meryl Streep is the cleverest woman at six.

George Clooney, Tyler Perry, producer Brian Grazer, Jerry Bruckheimer, Will Ferrell and Lord of The Rings director Peter Jackson also made the top 20 on the 50 Smartest People in Hollywood list.

Entertainment Weekly editors choose the names on the list by picking out "the brightest minds" in the film business, based on those who are revolutionising the way movies are made. (KL/EW/LR)
