Charles Saatchi Divorcing Nigella Lawson After Choking Incident

Charles Saatchi and The Taste’s Nigella Lawson are getting a divorce. The news broke in the most disgraceful manner ever, with Saatchi telling the Daily Mail that he is divorcing his wife of a decade before even bothering to serve her the papers. It just goes to show you that having a reported £135 million doesn’t mean a person has any class.

It’s actually a little surprising that Saatchi is the one who is filing for divorce, since the catalyst for his actions stems from an incident that occurred in June, when Saatchi and Lawson were eating dinner at a favorite haunt of theirs, a restaurant called Scott’s. While the two argued, Saatchi was caught grabbing Lawson around the neck and seemingly choking her by a camera situated outside the restaurant. At the time, Saatchi also attempted to do damage control, calling his behavior “playful.”

On Sunday, as part of the man’s attempt to save face, Saatchi also wrote in a statement that the incident that was picked up by newspapers several weeks ago was misconstrued by reporters.

“I abhor violence of any kind against women and have never abused her physically in any way. The row photographed at Scott’s restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention—as indeed she has done in the past, although not in front of Scott’s with a photographer snapping away. “

Yeah, you can’t make this shit up. Saatchi also feels the need to stress that he would never do anything violent or harmful toward his wife, whom he now wishes to divorce.

“I must stress again my actions were not violent. We are instinctively tactile people. Yes, my hands were around her neck, and they had been touching her arm. Difficult as it may be to believe, for those who have seen the pictures, there was no pressure applied to her.”

I don’t know whether the couple often used physicality within their relationship in order to argue or otherwise forcefully get points across. Some couples are certainly more heated than others, and as long as both parties argue in the same way and argue fair, it doesn’t matter. But Saatchi isn’t playing fair. Even pretending to choke someone is a threatening gesture and clearly, the action was disconcerting and upsetting to his wife, who moved out of their shared home after the images became public. Then, while she has stayed quiet and hoped for the whole thing to blow over, he has been extremely angry and extremely public with his behavior, denouncing his wife time and time again. Clearly, the two were having trouble getting along. However, difficult as it may be to believe, being a dick in public statements almost never helps a person’s case.
