Oscar winner Russell Crowe is heading on a trip to trace his family history - in Wales.

The Gladiator star and a team from Britain's BBC Wales will visit the small town of Wrexham where Crowe's grandfather John ran a fruit and vegetable store.

When his business faltered John emigrated to New Zealand where he married and had two children - one of whom became father to Russell.

The actor still has cousins in Wrexham and Cheshire, England, according to makers of the documentary BBC series Coming Home.

A BBC spokesperson confirms, "We have commissioned a special Coming Home documentary about Russell Crowe retracing his family roots to Wales."

Previous stars to explore their Welsh ancestry on the show include singer Donny Osmond and actress Susan Sarandon. (CG/WNTEX/JC)
