Divergent Book 3: Allegiant Preorders Outselling The Hunger Games Series Conclusion

Popularity of a book doesn't automatically translate to box office success. For example, young adults seem to love Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, but that didn't do much for the film's opening box office, and the planned sequel has since been put on hold. I'm optimistic that things will go a bit better for the feature adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent, which is due to hit theaters next March. In the meantime, it's looking like Allegiant will be a hit. The third and final book in the Divergent series is poised to hit shelves later this month, and it's already worked its way up to #5 on Amazon's best-sellers list, falling just behind Bill O'Reilly's Killing Jesus.
As if that's not reason enough to earn Allegiant some bragging rights, we're also told that the book is outselling The Hunger Games' series conclusion at Amazon.com by nearly five to one, as compared to sale snubbers for Hunger Games's conclusion (Mockingjay) a month prior to its release.
It's exciting news, and hopefully an indication that things are on track not only for the book to be a hit, but for the first film in what will hopefully turn into a series of films adapting Veronica Roth's story for the big screen. But I think it's also worth noting the timing of all of this, as Allegiant hits shelves just months ahead of Divergent's release. So the book series is probably benefiting at least a little bit from the marketing for the film. By comparison, Mockingjay probably didn't have much of an advantage there, as it was published in the summer of 2010, well over a year ahead of The Hunger Games' arrival in theaters. But that's just speculation. It's entirely possible that Allegiant's success is running mostly, if not entirely, on the steam of the series' popularity, separate from whatever buzz the movie is generating.
Allegiant is said to reveal the secrets of the dystopian world introduced to us in Divergent and Book 2: Insurgent. The story centers on the city of Chicago, which has been divided into five factions that determine each person's way of life. Shailene Woodley is set to play the lead role of Tris Prior in the film.
In addition to Allegiant's arrival later this month, we also have three more Tobias-focused eShorts set to arrive between now and when Divergent arrives in theaters next March. Here's the schedule, including the previously released eShort, The Transfer and the World of Divergent bonus book.
September 3 - The Transfer.
September 24 - The World of Divergent: The Path to Allegiant.
October 22 - Allegiant.
December 17 - The Initiate.
January 21 - The Son.
February 11 - The Traitor.
And then the feature adaptation of Divergent arrives in theaters March 21, 2014.
