Drew Barrymore Directs Best Coast's New Music Video

There are plenty of “buzz” bands that are circulating college radio stations and music festivals currently, but no other group fascinates me more than the Bethany Cosentino led Best Coast. This Los Angeles indie rock band consists of lead singer songwriter Cosentino, multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno and drummer Ali Koehler. The trio finally hit their stride in mainstream success last week when their debut album Crazy For You was well received by critics. Not only feeling the fame from their critical hit, the band has also been traveling around the world playing major shows with Portugal. The Man, Lykke Li and will be appearing at both Lollapalooza and Outside Lands music festivals this month. It’s been a great year for the California group and in every show they've played, more fans seem to find their way to them.
Movie star Drew Barrymore has even caught sight of them, and has now directed a music video for the group. Both Barrymore and Best Coast have pulled out all the stops here and created a remarkable music video for the song “Our Deal.” Featuring actors Donald Glover and Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat, this is quite an impressive endeavor. Take a look:
The video reminds me of a mix between 1970’s cult classic The Warriors and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders. It tells the story of two rival Los Angeles gangs with Glover and Shawkat leading one, and actor Tyler Posey running the other. The story finds its stride when one of the gang members, Kick Ass’s Chloe Mortez, falls in love with rival gang leader Posey. With the opening shots of trains going along the outskirts of a crime ridden city, it imitates the Walter Hill directed movie perfectly. The final showdown between the two rival gangs is similar to the best scenes in Outsiders, and the narrative ends in an unlikely twist, proving that Drew Barrymore is a talented director.
With talent like comedian Donald Glover, and the adorable Mortez, it's not a surprise this video is nothing short of amazing. It compliments “Our Deal” and helps give Barrymore a stronger cred among directing. Her movie Whip It showed her skills as a filmmaker, and now the music video accompaniment for “Our Deal” has done the same for her as a video artist.
