Dave Grohl sometimes guest hosts Chelsea Lately, and during a recent guest stint, he interviewed Sir Elton John. This interview was an oddball match-up, but later the two dropped an even bigger whammy when Grohl confirmed Elton recorded with Queens of the Stone Age for the band’s upcoming album.

Yes, you are hearing that correctly. I know it’s extremely difficult to connect musical similarities between the band and the veteran singer and piano player, but sometimes the unlikeliest match-ups produce the greatest results. Plus, with Grohl already signed on as a drummer on the new album, there is a ton of talent already involved. Don’t take my word on it, however; check out the interview clip, below.

Elton says he traveled to Los Angeles to work with Engelbert Humperdinck and then drove three blocks farther to work with Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl on drums. I love how the audience freaks out when Elton announces the collaboration, but even more promising is the moment when Elton calls the experience “a mindfuck.” Clearly the two men have good rapport and it’s pretty cool they were given the opportunity to work together as part of Josh Homme’s and the band's new musical effort.

Elton and Grohl aren’t the only two musicans set to appear on the new QOTSA album. Additionally, Jake Shears (of Scissor Sisters fame), Trent Reznor, and former band member Nick Oliveri are also set to appear. The whole thing pretty much sounds like a clusterfuck of different musical tastes and styles, but maybe that’s just what the album needed.
