Katy Perry's Roar May Be Her Biggest Single Ever

Katy Perry’s newest single, “Roar,” only dropped a little over a week ago, but it’s crushing in sales. The song has already become the biggest debut for a single Perry has ever had via iTunes and now total sales estimates have the song projected to be Perry’s biggest single ever. This is from the girl who has put out some major singles in the past, including “Firework” and “Teenage Dream.”

On Tuesday, Billboard sent out estimates that have “Roar” selling somewhere between 525,000 and 550,000 copies in its first week. That’s a lot of copies sold for a single in general, and it’s a lot for Perry, even though her singles historically have sold well. Her previous high in the singles charts came from “Firework,” which sold 509,000 copies in the week after Christmas in 2010. Even if “Roar” sells a little short of expectations, there’s a good chance the song will manage to beat the singer’s former best and become her biggest single ever.

The news should be especially exciting for the 28-year-old artist, who has seen estimates grow for her single since she announced that ”Roar” was on the way, releasing some Lisa Frank-looking cover art to boot. About a week ago, Perry’s new single was expected to sell in the same range as Lady Gaga’s new song, “Applause.” Over the last three days or so, Perry’s estimates have increased from the 450,000 copy range into the 500,000s while Lady Gaga has seen her new single buying estimates grow stagnant, sticking to the 200,000 copy range.

Perry’s been Tweeting up a storm about the song’s success, even noting her excitement about the iTunes victory earlier this week.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Lady Gaga or Perry’s new singles. Lady Gaga’s new song is a little too aggressive and Perry’s new song lacks some of the spunk and emotion her music typically exudes. Since "Roar" is a whole lot less weird than Gaga’s new track, it doesn’t surprise me in the least that Perry’s music would be selling like hotcakes and crushing her competitor, although if you ask Gaga, there is no feud or anything going on, despite Perry stomping on Gaga's album thunder with her gold semi truck album announcement. You can check out the new song, below and decide if you like it for yourself.
