Kim Kardashian Names Daughter North, Rate Her Choice

Not long after Kim Kardashian gave birth to a daughter some four or five weeks earlier than expected, rumors started circulating that the reality starlet and her musician boyfriend Kanye West decided to name the girl North. That’s right, as in North West. Naturally, anyone with common sense brushed these rumors aside almost immediately because successful, kind-hearted parents couldn’t possibly do that to a daughter, right? Wrong.

According to TMZ, neither Kanye nor Kim has spoken publically about their supposed handle choice, but the birth certificate at Cedars-Sinai Hospital says North West. God only knows how many laws were broken to obtain that information, but unless you’re of the opinion they’re planning to change the name, this is apparently what they’re going to go with.

As celebrities who don’t exactly live normal lives, most people expected the couple to work a bit outside the box. Many were even convinced they might invent some nonsense and slap a “K” in front of it, but the general reaction on Twitter has still be one of utter bewilderment. Less than an hour after it was first revealed, it’s already trending.

On the one hand, I get where Kim and Kanye are coming from. There’s something sort fun and kitchy about the whole North West idea, and while Roger Ebert hate hate hated it, there are some who really treasure the film North. I can definitely logically understand why two people could have thought of this name and decided there was some merit to it.

On the other hand, however, I still can’t believe this didn’t wind up on the cutting room floor. It seems like a cheeky handle you’d keep in the maybe pile before ultimately deciding, “No, we just can’t.” They did, however, and now this girl is going to have to actually use this name for the rest of her life. She’s going to have to introduce herself to her friends in Kindergarten and say, “Hi, my name is North West.” If she weren’t already so famous, I’m not sure anyone would actually believe her.

I want to give Kim and Kanye the benefit of the doubt. I think the world needs more interesting, eccentric and clever names, but I’m just not sure I can get on board with this. What do you think? How would you rate the name North West? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
