Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps has escaped unharmed following a car crash in Baltimore, Maryland. The gold medalist was driving a Cadillac Escalade through the city on Thursday night (13Aug09) when his vehicle collided with a Honda Accord, according to TMZ.com.

The star and his two passengers emerged unscathed, but the female driver of the Honda was taken to a local hospital after reportedly complaining of "head and arm pain". Phelps was questioned by police at the scene following the smash and then sent home.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi reveals alcohol was not a factor in the accident and no citations were issued. The accident is being investigated.

In 2004, shortly after he won six golds and two bronze medals at the Athens Olympics, Phelps pleaded guilty to driving while impaired after he was pulled over by Maryland cops for running a stop sign. He was sentenced to 18 months' probation. (LR/WNWCZM/MJ)
