Rant: Anti-Smoking Ads On New DVDs?

published: 2008-07-12 14:58:10
New York Daily News reported that Hollywood studios have agreed to place anti-smoking ads featuring an emphysema patient on all new DVDs rated PG-13 or lower which show tobacco use. Now don’t get me wrong, I am definitely on the anti-smoking side of things, but I think this venture is going to be almost as successful as the Parental Guidance warnings on rap CDs.

Arnold Schwarzeneger commented on the new plan stating, “it's not (my) place to dictate the creative content of movies…[If you have] someone playing Churchill in a historic movie and you say, 'But you can't touch a cigar,' I think it's ludicrous. I think this is going too far.”

I agree with the Govenator completely, and if we don’t think America’s kids are smart enough to separate the movies from reality, what’s next? A depiction of some girl with herpes on her mouth before any movie that shows a sex scene? Or better yet, a commercial of a kid playing with a gun with a huge “don’t play with guns, kids” motto before every movie that shows a gun fighting scene? Maybe they can get Ralphie from A Christmas Story to do the spot...Now, I'd watch that.

If you ask me, parents are too lazy to do the parenting themselves and make sure their kids “just say no” Nancy Reagan style. Well, it’s not the 80’s anymore, and rather than explaining that the smoking in a movie is not a “glamorous” activity, parents just want the movie industry to keep the images from their precious sheltered little minds.
