Rourke Calls Penn A Homophobe

When I was a little kid, my mother told me never to write anything down I didn’t want the whole world to read. I plan on adapting that advice to the Twenty-First Century for my own children: never take naked pictures or yourself and give them to a boyfriend because they will end up on the internet and never send a bitter, shit-talking text message because it will be forwarded to the person it’s about. Unfortunately for Mickey Rourke, he’s not my son.

According to The Daily Beast, the actor who’s almost assured an acting nod for his role in The Wrestler blasted good friend and presumed fellow nominee Sean Penn in a blistering text message which accused Spicolli of both being a homophobe and turning in an average performance. The performance in question is Sean Penn’s turn as gay political activist and local San Francisco politician Harvey Milk who was murdered by another city councilman. I saw Milk and thought Penn was wonderful.

I guess the real question here is why. Why would Mickey Rourke feel the need to lambaste his good friend via text message? Then again, this is Mickey Rourke, the same man who has consistently spoken his mind no matter how offensive for the last two decades. Well thought out, politically-correct moves aren’t exactly his strong suit. But I’m not even sure a little pre-Oscar trash talking is a bad thing. Sure, it’s catty and juvenile, but this stuff goes on at the Grammy’s every year. Then again, comparing the Academy Awards to the Grammy’s is like arguing the merits of Pele and Demarcus Beasley. Here’s to ending on a soccer reference.
