Should Elle Editors Be Ashamed For Covering Up Melissa McCarthy On The Cover?

Elle decided to highlight quite a few huge names for its annual Women In Hollywood issue this month. Thanks to her burgeoning popularity, Melissa McCarthy was chosen as the magazine’s cover girl, beating more traditional beauties like Penelope Cruz, Reese Witherspoon and Marion Cotillard. In theory, that sounds super progressive, but if some observers are to be believed, it’s actually the exact opposite thanks to a rather burly outfit choice made by the stylist.
As you can see in the above picture, McCarthy is not only showing a serious lack of skin on the cover, she’s bundled up from her knees to her neck in an oversized coat. With her head-turning sex hair and the chicness of the coat in question, there’s no denying she looks really good, but upon seeing the finished product, many took to the Internet to complain her body was being intentionally hidden. In fact, the outcry was so loud and fervent Elle was forced to release a statement on the matter.
”On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.”
On the one hand, it’s easy to see where the complainers are coming from. Hollywood is so obsessed with all things thin, especially when it comes to women. So, if a bigger girl is chosen to be on the cover, it would be nice to see her show off her shape with pride. That doesn’t mean she should sport something wild, but there has to be a middle ground between rocking a string bikini and wearing the equivalent of a parka.
On the other hand, however, McCarthy clearly had input in her costume choice. She has publically said she’s very proud of the cover and couldn’t get enough of the coat. Shouldn’t we be celebrating the fact that a woman was chosen to be on the cover on the basis of her comedy? Should we be celebrating the fact that McCarthy obviously feels great about how she looks in that picture?
