Should The Monkees Attend Davy Jones' Funeral?

Whenever a celebrity dies, the surviving family members must decide whether to hold a giant funeral to accommodate fans, a somewhat large service to accommodate everyone he or she worked with in the industry or a small and private burial for only family members and close friends. Those closest to Davy Jones have decided an intimate gathering for a small group, coupled with two large public memorials would be most fitting. As such, the singer’s former Monkees bandmates would likely qualify to attend all three, but it seems they’ve elected not to do so in honor of the family.

According to Billboard, drummer Micky Dolenz knows if he or the other guys were to show up, the situation could potentially devolve into a media circus. As the family and closest friends want to grieve together, he thinks the stars would be best to stay away, at least at the burial.

As for the public memorials however, Dolenz is hoping Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith will join him to honor their fallen brother, though official plans have not been set in motion. The family has already announced one will take place in the UK and the other in New York, but the specifics will not be set in motion until Jones is officially laid to rest.

On the one hand, I appreciate Dolenz trying to honor Jones’ family in their time of need. It takes a big man to stay away from the service of someone he loved and spent years touring with, but on the other hand, part of me thinks the guys really do deserve to be there, whether it creates a media circus or not. Davy lived part of his life with cameras following his every move, and if he were to go out the same way, I hardly think he would mind.
