Quentin Tarantino fans might be pumped for the director’s newest movie to open tomorrow, but apparently, Spike Lee does not share their enthusiasm. In fact, he’s decided to avoid the movie entirely out of respect for his ancestors, many of whom lived and died as slaves.

Speaking to Vibe Magazine, Lee said he’s not telling anyone else what to do, but he can’t bring himself to see it. Later, he took to Twitter to elaborate more specifically on his motives. You can take a look at his exact quote below…
”American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves.Stolen From Africa.I Will Honor Them.”

Not surprisingly, reaction to Spike’s vow not to see Django Unchained has been very mixed. Some think he’s absolutely right to avoid a movie that uses slavery in such a manner, while others think it’s completely unfair for him to boycott a movie when he has no firm idea exactly how it depicts slavery.

Lee has been very critical of Tarantino in the past for very liberal usage of the n-word in his movies. Thus, it’s not a big shock to hear he’s displeased with the idea of Quentin’s new movie. What do you think? Does Spike have a good reason for staying away, or is this the wrong fight for him to pick? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
