Tom Gabel, Against Me!'s Lead Singer, Will Begin Living As A Woman

Tom Gabel, the lead singer of punk band Against Me!, has decided to change genders. In the coming months, the singer will begin taking hormones, undergo electrolysis treatments and eventually take on the name Laura Jane Grace. No doubt the news will come as a shock to most fans, but for Gabel, it’s been a long time coming.

Speaking in the new issue of Rolling Stone, Gabel admits the process will certainly lead to some awkward and embarrassing moments. Accepting those as they come will be a challenge, but ultimately, it’s the love of her family that matters the most. Here’s what Gabel told the outlet about breaking the news to her wife Heather…

"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

It’s hard to fight battles alone, and while I’m sure Gabel’s transition will result in some new feelings for Heather, it’s nice to know she’s committed to standing by. As for how fans will accept the news, we’ll just have to wait and see. Once the hormones take affect, it’s likely Gabel’s voice will change. Because of that, the group’s sound may change a bit, but if that means the lead singer finding long term happiness and security, it’s clearly a risk worth taking.

Life is about embracing differences. It’s about being comfortable with who you are and striving to find the best in yourself. Hopefully this transition will result in an energized and confident Laura Jane Grace.
