Lou Reed has taken charge of an arts festival at Australia's famous Sydney Opera House - picking his favorite music and films to be shown at the two-week event. The veteran rocker launched the Vivid Sydney festival on Thursday night (27May10) along with his performance artist wife, Laurie Anderson. The couple takes over from Brian Eno, who curated last year's (09) festival, and they've picked 27 music and theater acts to perform at the city's legendary venue.

Speaking at Thursday's launch, Reed said, "This is a great opportunity to have fun, come over to a place that we really like with musicians we really like and show films we really like. Here's a wonderful opportunity to show some stuff you might not know about and that might be really great fun for you. The fun for us is putting it together. Everything in here is something we really, really like."

Reed will perform at the event, along with singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones and gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama, while acts from Russia, Japan and Canada are also on the bill.

The rocker has also enlisted his private tai chi tutor to teach classes on the Opera House forecourt. (LR/WNWCAAB/ZN)
