With a pale white face, a truly disturbing voice and an urn, WWE manager Paul Bearer, at five feet, eleven inches, was visually mesmerizing, even in a world populated almost exclusively with hulking behemoths and larger than life wrestlers. He was, without question, one of the greatest on-screen personalities sports entertainment was ever blessed with. On and off for more than two decades, he thrilled fans with his spooky weirdness in the squared circle and offered comfort and compassion to those who used his funeral home in real life and knew him as Bill Moody.
For segments of his life, the legend battled problems with obesity and problems with his gallbladder. In recent years, he was able to get the weight under control, but in the end, he couldn’t overcome all of the conditions. Earlier this week, he passed away at the age of fifty-eight, joining his beloved wife of more than thirty years Dianna who passed away from cancer in 2009.
Most wrestlers and managers change their personalities and characters numerous times because their shtick grows thin with audiences. It’s a great credit to Bearer that stayed pretty much the same for the majority of his run and the adoring public still couldn’t get enough. He was the perfect man to manage the Undertaker and Kane, and no one will ever be able to replace him.
In his honor, check out footage of his surprise return three years ago. Every single person seems elated to see him again…
