Woman Says She Was Fired For Being Too Hot

Sometimes being big busted is a big problem. I know this because I am big busted and the challenges of finding the right coverage are like trying to find long enough pants when you have giraffe legs or trying to find the right dress when your hips jut out more than an anorexic’s ribcage. Finding clothes sucks, but that does not mean there are not appropriate outfits for different situations. From weddings, to work, to nights in front of the TV with Haagen-Das pints, there are all kinds of appropriate attire, and also plenty of ways to fall into a “don’t” outfit trap.

Lauren Odes learned this recently when she began working for underwear company Native Intimates in April. After appearing at work in a tight black dress and boots, she was told her clothing was too sexy. For the entire month the 29 year-old worked at the lingerie company, she was asked repeatedly to change up her costumes, and at one point, it was even noted she might do better at her data entry position if she taped her chest down. Eventually, Ms. Odes was fired from her position for dressing the way she dressed and now she’s suing, saying it is unfair that the company fired her for “being too hot.”

It’s never correct to tell a person she needs to tape her chest down to fit in for a job. However, if Native Intimates has a dress code policy, than there is certainly some expectation for how to dress in the office. Even if there is no such policy, it seems unfair to take legal action against a company for asking the young woman to leave her position after she repeatedly ignored requests to change her clothing choices. No woman asks for the body she gets or the trends that become fashionable; however, just because a person has something to flaunt does not mean he or she needs to flaunt it.

Now, if there is more of a sexual harassment angle to the case, than Ms. Oades may actually have a complaint. We won’t have all the details until this one lands in front of a judge, but I certainly don’t think Odes should pull an Apprentice Season 1 with this one and use sex to sell her case.
