Would You See A Broadway Musical Adaptation Of Rocky?
Since practically the first moment it was released in 1976, Rocky has been in the conversation for the greatest sports movie ever made. If Hairspray book writer Thomas Meehan has his way, however, it’ll soon be in the conversation for the greatest musical ever made. The Producers scribe has partnered with composer/ lyricist team Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens to put together the framework of a musical based on the Oscar-winning story about a Philadelphia underdog who overcomes the odds and achieves incredible success in the ring.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter and the Starcatcher director Alex Timbers has also boarded the project, and perhaps more importantly, Sylvester Stallone is standing behind it too. Here’s what the original Rocky star had to say…
On the one hand, it’s easy to see why Broadway all-stars would be so attracted to adapting Rocky. Not only does the name have huge buzz behind it, it’s also just the type of rags to riches story so many incredible musical productions are based off of. On the other hand, there’s always a fear whenever beloved movies are updated that the new version will only piss off fans of the original. Plus, the target demographics of Rocky doesn’t seem like it would overlap that much with the typical Broadway demographics.
