Zooey Deschanel And Ben Gibbard Separate After 2 Years Of Marriage
It's a good week to feel cynical about celebrity breakups, given all the Kardashian nonsense, but here's some news that makes me genuinely sad. According to US Weekly, New Girl star Zooey Deschanel and her husband of two years, Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, have separated. Their sources tells them the breakup was "mutual and amicable." The couple has no kids.
Sure, I liked this marriage because of all the shallow reasons you root for any celebrity couple-- they both have good fashion and indie cred and good taste in music, and when you like an actor and a singer's work you generally root for them to be happy together. Plus there was this tweet from back in February, part of a series in which Deschanel described the dance-off she was having in her house with Ben. Who doesn't love a married couple that has a dance-off!
But hey, 50% of marriages end in divorce, and that rate is inevitably higher when you're two people constantly going on tours, filming TV shows and otherwise living in an unforgiving spotlight that could turn the best people into monsters. With Death Cab for Cutie currently on tour in Europe and New Girl-- one of the best new shows on TV right now, I might add-- currently shooting, both Gibbard and Deschanel have plenty to keep them busy and keep their minds off things. But still, condolences to them both. It's always a shame to see people give love a genuine shot and have it not work out.
