Beach Boys and the Byrds collaborator Jerry Cole has died of a heart attack, aged 68.

The guitarist became a renowned space-age surf music guru in the 1960s as the leader of the Spacemen and a member of producer Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew studio collective.

Cole performed on the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album and can also be heard on the Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man. Cole, who was born Jerald Edward Kolbrak in Wisconsin, was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2004. (KL/LAT)
