Flare Surfing: The Next Big Thing?Author: Jacob Sundstrom

I’ve lived in California my entire life, and in my nineteen years of existence I’ve been to the beach many, many times. I don’t really care for the beach in general; in part because in northern California the beaches are covered in seaweed and the water is freezing, and in southern California the beaches are crowded and the sand is hotter than hell. I was also traumatized by Jaws as a young child. Sufficed to say, I’ve never touched a surf board, let alone set the back on fire and gone tubing, or whatever it is these crunchy groovers call it.
The Post Game has the story and video of a new phenomenon called flare surfing. The effect of flare surfing during the day is awesome, but it’s even cooler at night. At first I assumed the surfers were holding the flares in their hands while surfing, but it actually looks like the flare is attached to the back of the board, which forces the surfers to keep the back of their board out of the water. The story suggested this could become the next great Olympic sport (whether they meant flare surfing, or just surfing in general, I’m not sure); but holding the event in a place where there’s no ocean nearby could pose a pretty big problem. Who knows, though? Maybe it could be the event added by California if Los Angeles ever gets the games again. Okay, so, hopefully that never happens (I can only imagine the traffic), but surfing has never been more popular, so now’s the time for it to try to make a move up.
