It’s not often a big movie star is able to check into the Betty Ford Clinic without someone catching wind of it, but then again, it’s not often an actor decides to seek treatment before there’s a full on problem. Gerard Butler was able to accomplish both of those feats three weeks ago, and by all accounts, he emerged from the facility today feeling rested and rejuvenated.

According to TMZ, Butler’s problems essentially came in two waves. During the filming of 300, he supposedly began taking some prescription medication to deal with some physical ailments the role brought on. Then, late last year, he was injured in a surfing accident, which kicked his medication intake up another notch. To prevent a potential addiction, he reportedly decided to enter treatment earlier this month.

Like professional athletes, actors sometimes put their bodies through incredible strain to quickly transform sizes. That, coupled with the physicality of some action movies, can lead to injuries requiring pain medication. If taken for an extended period of time, that can be a slippery slope. Thus, I applaud Butler for being very proactive about this. Everyone’s rock bottom is at a different place, and his may have simply been waking up with the immediate urge to medicate.

Pop Blend wishes Butler nothing but the best in his continued recovery. I think I speak for everyone when I say we’d like to see the actor kicking ass and making new movies for as long as possible.
