Jimmy Kimmel To Host Correspondents DinnerAuthor: Mack Rawden

Jimmy Kimmel may not be Bob Hope, but for my money, there is no one currently alive better at hosting live ceremonies. He’s the perfect blend of witty and professional, the type of guy who can shuffle between segments equally well whether he’s got three minutes to kill or ten seconds. He’s handled ABC’s annual upfront presentations numerous times in the past, as well as multiple Comedy Central Roasts and the ESPY and American Music Awards. So, it should come as no surprise that the White House has asked the comedian to handle the next Correspondents’ Dinner.
The combination roast, awards ceremony and PR opportunity will be held this coming April. The night will begin with scholarships and awards for various journalists, continue with a performance by Kimmel and conclude with President Obama delivering good natured jokes aimed at himself, his friends and his enemies. According to The Washington Post, the assignment is just the latest bit of good news for the affable host. He’s poised to finish 2011 with his best ratings figures in almost five years, and his show has experienced more viewer gains than any other late night talk show. He might not have the prestige of Letterman or the mass appeal of Leno, but I’ve never met a single person who dislikes his show. He’s just the right amount of funny without appearing to try too hard. I typically watch the Correspondents’ Dinner each year, but with Kimmel at the helm, that’s all the incentive I need. I’d highly recommend taping the event, at least in a few months when your DVR’s guide starts showing that far ahead. |
