Madonna Tops Google Searches During Super Bowl, Are You Surprised?

The Giants and Patriots may have given viewers a hell of a game, but it appears neither team did enough to monopolize Google search. The Internet giant released its list of the top five queries during the Super Bowl today, and the Patriots and Giants came in third and fifth, respectively. Topping the list was the Material Girl, followed closely by “halftime show”. Tom Brady came in fourth, and MVP Eli Manning didn’t crack the list.

You can head over to Google’s Blog for the full breakdown, but to me, the real story is how much more interested viewers apparently are in the big game’s entertainment. I get why Janet Jackson would have topped the list after her wardrobe malfunction. I even get why their might have been a huge spike in MIA searches after the singer flipped off the camera, but Madonna appears to have steamrolled the competition throughout the afternoon.

It just goes to show you how much bigger the Super Bowl is than just the game. In fact, a case could be made that for many Americans, the real prizes are halftime, the commercials interspersed throughout the game and of course, the food with the football game itself simply being the medium that brings everything together.

Maybe I’m blowing these search trends out of proportion. Maybe this isn’t really a surprise at all. What do you think? Do you find it strange that both Madonna and “halftime show” were searched for more than the Giants and Patriots? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
