Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh has passed away. The forty year old was found unresponsive in his room at the Raffaello Hotel in Chicago yesterday. Authorities were called to the scene, but by the time they arrived, nothing could be done. A full inquiry to find the cause of death is already underway, but police have publicly stated no foul play is suspected.
Most of us have one skill that sets us apart, one strange little talent we’re better at than everyone we know. More often than not, it’s a stupid party trick no employer would pay for, but Mikey Welsh was actually blessed with two world class sought after skills. He first joined Weezer in 1998 after bassist Matt Sharp left the band. He stayed for three years, during which time he played on The Green Album, but left in 2001. A highly successful art career followed in which his works were sold to numerous collectors, other musicians and business executives. According to Rolling Stone, Weezer issued a statement praising Welsh’s time with the band and his later artistic endeavors. The group will continue with its previously scheduled Chicago show this evening and will dedicate it in the ex-bassist’s honor. In a strange turn of events, Welsh actually predicted his untimely passing on Twitter, saying, “dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today.” Pop Blend sends out its thoughts to Welsh’s family, his former bandmates and the scores of fans who were touched by his music and artwork. He will be greatly missed. |
