As the ominous clouds overhanging London for much of Sunday morning gave way to sunshine, one can imagine Paul McCartney nodding with the satisfaction of a man who knew it wouldn’t rain on his wedding day. Ever the optimist, the former Beatle wed his heiress girlfriend Sunday in a civil union reportedly performed by his brother. The press wasn’t allowed inside, but McCartney and his new bride Nancy Shevell emerged forty-five minutes later looking like two kids who just found the Christmas presents in the back of their parents’ closet. She wore an elegant but far from showy dress designed by Paul’s daughter Stella, and he wore a suit and blue tie for the event that was decidedly less grandiose than the one McCartney had with Heather Mills .

According to CBS, hundreds of fans eagerly waited outside and cheered for the couple as they piled into a waiting car to head to the reception. Featuring just a few dozen guests, it took place in Paul’s backyard. By all accounts, the bride was more than pleased with the understated festivities, which is precisely why this union will likely last. Contentment is more a product of personality than situation.
