Queen Star May Fights For Welsh Badgers
Queen star Brian May has launched a crusade to save badgers in Wales from a planned cull. The rocker is the brains behind the Save Me campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the plight of badgers following the announcement of an extermination plan by Welsh officials, keen to combat the spread of bovine tuberculosis.
In a recent post on his blog, May blasted the cull, insisting, "The decision flies in the face of all available scientific evidence, which clearly predicts that the cull will have no beneficial effect on Bovine health, and may in fact increase the incidence of the disease in Welsh cattle." And on Sunday (11Apr10), May took to his blog again to launch his new campaign, stating, "I hope to at least open people's eyes to the possibility of making animals a priority."
He's even taking his crusade to TV, and recently filmed a pro-badgers news piece about the impact of bovine tuberculosis on Welsh farms, and then appeared on debate show Wales This Week to discuss the issue with agriculture expert Stephen James. He says, "I got involved because I think animals don't have a voice. And I've become somebody who wants to give a voice to the animals."
A ruling on the cull, proposed by Welsh Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones, is expected later this month (Apr10). (KL/WNWC/MJ)
