This afternoon, officers for the West Goshen Police Department revealed Jackass star Ryan Dunn’s blood alcohol level at the time of the fatal crash was more than twice the legal limit. The exact calculation was .196, and its official release confirms what many suspected all along.
Several hours before the wreck, Dunn tweeted a picture of himself and several friends drinking at a local bar. One of those buddies was Jackass production assistant Zachary Hartwell. Together, they piled into Dunn’s Porshe and headed for the highway, but they never arrived at their destination. The car, now estimated to have been traveling at over one hundred and thirty miles an hour, skidded and careened off the highway, tumbling down a steep embankment and later catching fire. Several officers who arrived at the scene told the media it was the worst automobile accident they’d ever seen.
None of these sobering details make Ryan Dunn and Zachary Hartwell’s deaths any less tragic to their friends, family and fans, but they can serve as warning signs for others intent on making the same mistake. The sad truth is the most United States citizens have driven drunk at least once. It seems like everyone I know has regrettable stories of intoxicated driving. Some have one bad memory, others have dozens. It's unfair to point the judgmental finger at the Jackass star and pretend he was alone in his mistake, but it is fair to hope this accident ends up saving lives in the future.
I didn’t know Ryan Dunn, but he made me smile. I’ll miss him. So will millions of other strangers.
