Nearly three years ago, Chris Brown was arrested for making criminal threats and an investigation was launched into an alleged incident of domestic violence. Shortly thereafter, news outlets unfairly revealed that Rihanna was the victim of said assault. Almost immediately, the public began to turn on Chris Brown, and when the now famous photograph of the damage he inflicted was illegally leaked by someone in the police department, all hell broke loose. Observers speculated Brown’s career would never recover, and he was later sentenced to five years probation, anger management classes and counseling. The singer was also told to stay away from Rihanna at all times.

Fast forward to the present and rumors are abounding that Brown and Rihanna may be in the process of getting back together. Over the past few months, he’s posted several messages claiming his love to an anonymous someone, and each time, she’s responded moments later with a Tweet of her own. E! Online has gone through and tracked the correspondences, and the evidence seems to be there. A rekindling of the relationship may be currently ongoing or imminent, but neither party has publicly commented on the matter.

Upon first glance, it’s easy to point the finger at Rihanna and call her foolish for potentially getting back with a guy who once hit her, but the truth of the matter is this sort of backslide happens all the time. Had the police kept the matter private as they were legally supposed to, none of us would have ever seen that awful photograph, and we might be preaching a different tune. Millions of women forgive their husbands every year for unspeakable actions, and while those decisions to do so might be questionable, we don’t tar and feather each one of them. Sometimes life is complicated. No excuse in the world can justify hitting a woman. Ever. But if it only happened once and she’s ready to forgive him, is it our place to judge?
