For the latest single off her Born This Way album, "Marry The Night," Lady Gaga has gone solo as a director for the first time, presenting a 14-minute music video that's a short film, artistic meta commentary, Black Swan homage and so, so much more. If you thought her Thanksgiving TV special was inscrutable and strangely revealing, just wait until you see this video, who gaga says is "about the worst day of her life." It starts with the sight of Gaga being wheeled into a psychiatric ward on a stretcher, but in her voiceover she describes how she chose to make the entire scene more artistic, like giving the nurses next season's Calvin Klein to wear, "because I loathe reality." She then points out that one of the nurses has a great ass. See where else it goes in the video below, via MTV:
It's hard to know if the length of this video, or its general self-indulgence or insanity, is really necessary; a lot of the scenes look really good, but given that it's all intended as a tribute to Gaga's life before she was famous, isn't it all a little navel-gazing? Then again, she pulls out some really striking images, from simply dousing herself in Cheerios to the sight of her wearing insane red couture surrounded by flames at the end. Even if Gaga is clearly fascinated by herself, we're all fascinated too, so who can blame her? I'm not sure if the fact that this video premiered at MTV.com indicates that it will air on the actual channel as well, but it would be nice to think so-- Gaga has made the kind of sprawling epic video that were the network's bread and butter in the 80s and 90s, and given that she's the most powerful pop star out there right now, it'd be great to see her use that power to bring the video back. While we wait to see if that happens, let us know what you think of the video in the comments. |
