Official Plot Synopsis

16 Blocks is a character-driven action thriller that stars Bruce Willis as Jack Mosley, a broken down NY detective assigned to escort a petty criminal (Mos Def) from the precinct to the courthouse. The seemingly simple 16 block journey becomes a test of character for them when Jack’s ex-partners attempt to stop them. It’s the story of how two men change each other during a tense 110-minute struggle between life and death.

Anyone else have the words Die Hard 3 flashing on and off in their head?

16 Blocks is Richard Donner’s chance at redemption, or maybe it’d be better to call it his last chance to return to relevancy. Once one of the premier directors in Hollywood, 76-year-old Donner hasn’t made anything worth noticing since Maverick back in 1994. He’s been making movies, they’re just not noteworthy, except those which are noteworthy for their badness.

It’ll be tough forgiving the man who forced Timeline upon us, but Donner was great once and if he can return to form I’m willing to forget his past transgressions against cinema. 16 Blocks is loaded with potential as a taut, small-scale little thriller, and though Bruce Willis is a known quality commodity, Mos Def has quietly been proving himself as a capable actor.

Keep an eye out for 16 Blocks. As Bruce Willis’s Hostage was last year, this could be one of 2006’s early surprises.
