Cars is the saga of Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot animated stock-car voiced by actor Owen Wilson. En route to a big race, the cocky McQueen gets waylaid in Radiator Springs, where he finds the true meaning of friendship and family.

After an early trailer that made Cars look like it was well on its way to being Pixar's first bad movie, things are looking up for the little gear head movie. The film's latest trailers are absolutely beautiful, a marked contrast the bland, uninspiring stuff we first saw from the film.

It’s Pixar, so of course that no matter how shaky the concept you have to give this movie the benefit of the doubt. Double that, since the film is directed by Pixar giant and now Disney animation head John Lasseter. Lasseter is well on his way to being the new Walt Disney, and anything the guy touches instantly turns to gold.

What was to be Pixar’s last film with Disney has become the first shining symbol of Pixar and Disney’s new permanent partnership after Disney bought out the Lamp Jr. inspired, computer animation company. But who bought who? Disney paid for Pixar, but it’s Pixar’s creative minds that ended up in charge of Disney. Cars is the last product of their old cooperation and a harbinger of the new, closer relationship which may well end up being the thing that saves Disney from its inevitable slide into irrelevance and direct to DVD pandering.

Watch for Cars to clean up at the box office this summer, good or not. The Pixar reputation means everything, and in a year absolutely glutted with computer animated movies their work continues to stand head and shoulders above the competition. Even the voice casting of newly anointed box office poison Larry the Cable guy can’t ruin that.

I wasn't really excited about this after the first trailer yet Pixar's reputation bought them the benefit of the doubt. The other trailers look better but I seriously doubt we'll get a repeat of The Incredibles.
