Official Plot Synopsis

Every time I hear the name I inexplicably think of Juwanna Mann, but Russell Crowe embraces his reputation as an angry blowhard prone to bouts of fisticuffs in the boxing movie, Cinderella Man. Here’s hoping writer Akiva Goldsman works in a Tugger cameo.
Boxing seems almost better suited to movies than sport, since few people actually care about real fights anymore, yet we’re all suitably obsessed with Rocky-ripoff filmmaking. This one is directed by Ron Howard, which probably means that for a boxing flick, it’ll have a soft and heartwarming edge. I’m ok with that. I like Howard, I just wish he’d pick a more personable muse than Russell Crowe, good actor or not.
Set in New York during the depression, Crowe stars as James Braddock, a man who boxes for money to feed his family. The trailer alludes to repeated failures and being a bit over the hill, which of course primes the audience for a glorious montage in which Braddock stages a comeback. In the process of putting bread on his family’s table, Braddock becomes a lot like Seabiscuit, bringing hope to a nation in its time of need… or something. Hopefully, unlike Seabiscuit, we’ll actually care about Braddock. It’s another true story that brought hope to millions story shoved down our throats in the quest for an Oscar. Expect the usual.
