A live-action movie adaptation of the popular anime series.
Dragonball Z has a lot to answer for. Especially if you’re a fan of what my friends tell me is the “good” anime out there. Personally I refuse to believe such a thing exists, because I’ve been scarred beyond recognition by Goku and his gang of halfwit thugs. It’s anime like Dragonball Z and Pokemon which represents the art form in mainstream pop culture, and it’s also anime like Dragonball Z and Pokemon which has kept the rest of it from making inroads into the mainstream at all.
Sure Dragonball is popular with 12-year olds and people who have been hit in the head by a brick (a surprisingly large number of Americans if the ratings of American Idol are any indication), but anyone else forced into watching it generally has the good sense to either commit suicide right then and there or to turn off the television and vow never to watch any sort of anime ever again. It’s those people who will now never give Akira or the work of Hayao Miyazaki a chance. Anime? Hell no man, thanks to Dragonball I’ve had more than enough of that.
So now anime’s biggest black hole is becoming a movie, and heaven help every anime to live action movie which hits theaters after. Making Dragonball into a financially successful box office phenom should be easy, after all people who watch Dragonball Z will clearly watch just about anything as long as it has guys with plastic hair standing around shouting and randomly throwing balls of energy at each other. With CGI, guys standing in empty rooms shooting frickin laser beams is pretty damn easy. Making a movie that won’t be hated by everyone with an IQ over 40, well with Dragonball Z as source material I’m pretty sure that’s impossible.
A prediction: Next up for the Apocalypse, movies based on card battling.

You're saying that I should go deep into something that I hate, in order to force myself to like it? I should watch more of it, because it sucks? I think there's a word for something like it... I believe it's brainwashing.
Wow, way to generalize. I guess Brian Tyler (composer) is an idiot, because he says Dragonball is his dream job, and that he's been a hardcore fan ever since the 80's..
But then, how could an idiot compose "Children of Dune," "Rambo," "Constantine," and other great movies?
Oh, and Stephen Chow is a fan and he's a genius.
What kind of idiot reviews a movie before it's even released? I won't be visiting your site any more - because if it's anything like you, I'm sure it's trash.
I don't know what kind of idiot reviews a movie before it's even released. I don't know anyone who does that. This for instance, is very clearly marked as a PREVIEW. Pre, as in before viewing.
This is the same man (Joshua Tyler) who despises Anime so much.
"There are two ways to review this movie. The right way is to look at it objectively, examining how the film is put together and picking apart the script by pointing out the gaping logical gaps present in it. I’ll be reviewing the film the wrong way, as a man who was once a little boy crying because Optimus Prime was dead. Now whatever is left of that kid inside me has had a wakeup call. The movie he’s been waiting twenty years to see is finally here; Optimus Prime is back from the grave and he needs my help"
Has Joshua forgotten that "Transformers" was not only created in Japan but considered as "Anime" the very thing that Joshua despises so much. This goes to show how bias this guy really is. Hate to break it to you Joshua my dear boy but Optimus Prime your Idol and Hero is considered as an Anime Character. Also if you hate the idea of Anime's being transfered in to Live Action why did you love "Transformers" so much? I guess you find the Idea of Giant Alien Robots from another planet a lot more sophisticated than "Dragon Ball".
Interesting point Craig. Transformers is great. However, I don't think it's technically anime. It was written and recorded in America and produced for American audiences. Yes, the animation style is somewhat similar because the cartoon was drawn in Japan, however it's not really Anime, at least not as I understand it.
That said, there are always exceptions to every rule. As I said above, I'm certain there is good Anime out there somewhere. Unfortunately, Dragonball Z and the other crappy Anime we've had foisted on us here in America has done a good job of scaring me away from it.
Transformers not an anime? Are you stupid or what?. Transformers IS an anime. This is another reason to know that you dont know what you are talking about.
About your kiddish rant about Dragonball and DBZ. How old are you? Because you say that DB is followed by 12 years-old kids and dumb people, yet you sound like one.
You actually have admitted you havent watched DB and DBZ, then why bash it?, so you tend to talk trash and bash things you dont know about?. I used to think DB and DBZ were dumb and for children, but then I started seeing it and changed my mind completely. Realized it was a very epic anime with a great storyline. Im not saying you should watch it, I dont care if you watch it or not, my point is that you SHOULD NOT talk trash about something YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN. Do you know how stupid you sound when you talk trash about something you dont know about?
Oh and for your information most of DB and DBZ fans outside the USA ARE NOT 12 years-old kids (I dont know how is it inside the USA). Thats another thing you should know.
So you say: "Sure Dragonball is popular with 12-year olds and people who have been hit in the head by a brick" and "Making a movie that won’t be hated by everyone with an IQ over 40, well with Dragonball Z as source material I’m pretty sure that’s impossible."
Like Adam said in his post, which you conveniently decided to avoid: Are you just saying that Brian Tyler (composer of many great scores), Stephen Chow
and many others like them who happen to be hardcore fans of Dragonball, are idiots with IQs below 40?.
You my friend have proven yourself to be an idiot. Thank you very much.
PS: From now on cinemablend will surely NOT BE my first choice when it comes to movie reviews, previews, etc. We should thank you for that.
@JoshT:
No one should force you to like something you don't give a shit about. I know I wouldn't appreciate that. As someone who's also a fan of Ghibli (although I like the non-Miyazaki current better) and other relatively decent anime, will you listen to what I have to say? just a little bit?
here goes...
Dragonball Z is widely known as drag-ON ball Z because it lasted so long. Only in that sense can you compare it to something as kiddish as Pokemon. It had good elements (e.g. fighting aside there was a fair share of character interaction), but in that respect the series preceding it was much, much better.
The first Dragonball series is very different in tone, characterization, and in story. Sure, there's still a lot of fight but it's more a "Find the dragonballs" adventure. The only way to realize that is if you experience v14-17 firsthand. If you don't want to, just take my word for it when I say that the rest of the Dragonball saga following it was a baaaad rehash of *that* part. That part is the only thing that makes the rest of the Dragonball saga halfway decent.
Now, take a director that's known for his controversal approach to scripts but has thus far only directed horror (no, not Sam Raimi XD) - James Wong. Add many of the people that did the effects and stunts for 300, Spiderman, The Matrix, you name it. Add Brian Tyler as a composer (Rambo 4, Dune Children, Constantine). Throw in a great cast with Chow Yun Fat known for great action scenes. Finally, add James Marsters whose acting abilities are great, and you've got a winning combo.
Or, at least, it should be a very interesting attempt. This could be the Spiderman of anime. Remember that without that movie there wouldn't have been money for projects like X-men, the new Batman, Constantine, you name it.
That's precisely why you shouldn't judge a movie before you've watched it. Especially not if you don't even realize the difference between Dragonball and Dragonball *Z*.
In the first place, the most wonderful anime should not be adapted into live action - sometimes it's the mere fact that they are animated that makes them great. ^^
Have you ever looked at the original Manga Comics? THey are awesome amazing !!! Dragonball is the most Sold Comic in the World with over 250 Millions of Comic Books (over 100 pages each!) -
Its one of the most search word in the Internet since there is an Internet !!! Its the most searched word in (1999); 2000 and 2001 !! and after that it was all the time on the 2nd place or in the Top 10 ... look at the lycos50 reviews and Artikels !!!
There is no other Game Series that has more VideoGames than Dragonball has !!! (exept "Mario Games" )
If you count the DB Games u get over 60 Video Games in all the Consoles of the last 20 years !!! Alone for the Nintendo and Super Nintendo there are over 16 Video Games !!!
The Anime Series has over 500 TV Episodes !! And with this its one of the longest Animations Series ever Producest in history. Compare it to the Simpsons , they have 410 Episodes.
Dragonball has over 21 Movies ( from DB, DBZ, DBGT and OVAS, Specials) !!!
Im a Fan since 17 years now .. i now almost everything about DB so I dont need to lie .. this are all Facts you can look after ...
Most of the people that think that DB is Shit, havent even looked at some Episodes ... you can judge a Series after at least watching 10% of the Episodes ... that would be 40 to 50 TV Episodes from DB !! After that and only after that you can judge.
Me for example .. I hated the Simpsons first ... but i was like ok everybody watches it and they say its cool and they like it .. so i started to give the Series a chance .. and after 30 to 40 Episodes i started to like the Series !!
Millions of Dragonball Fans out there cant be wrong ... they have realise the Spirit and the SINGULARITY of this AMAZING AND FANTASTIC SERIES that is in the same LIGA as the Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Simpsons, StarTrek, StarWArs, Batman,James Bond, SpiderMan, DisneyMovies ect. -

'after all people who watch Dragonball Z will clearly watch just about anything as long as it has guys with plastic hair standing around shouting and randomly throwing balls of energy at each other. '
Yeah just like star trek ay, or star wars. Instead they wear plastic suits and fight with laser beam swords......Or better yet random machines that turn into cars and trucks that want to save the human race.
Actually I do agree what Josh is saying, just not his harsh attitude. Dragonball isn't that a big deal when the entire plot of the entire series is just about fighting. Though at times you see some glimpses of development on the story and the characters, but in the end, its just fighting. I mean, so what? Its just some dudes that just flared up with yellow aura and just beat the crap out of them. Dragonball may be ok or even good, but its not even close as being the best anime ever.
Yes its great for a TV series, but when I heard it now being made into a movie produced by Hollywood, I made the most loudest groan I have ever done. Is Hollywood running out of ideas/stories that they now using anime as their source? Why can't they leave anime alone and let them be legendary on their own instead of raping them into major films?!
Fans would look forward to this adaption of the show because they grew up with the show and they will be excited to see it bigger and better on the big screen with live actors. And I can understand that. But you have to remember that the people may not handle the source very well. I know its too early to judge the movie that hasn't been realized, but Dragonball isn't that worth a big deal. The cast isn't that interesting, its story isn't worth looking forward to and the image of an American actor portraying a big bulky guy with large wild golden hair and flaring aura all over his body looks ridiculous in my mind.
Some adaptations lived and become classics, but most have failed. And I'm such a huge fan of anime and I'm scared that my favorite animes will be adapted into movies, unless its handled by the right people.
I'm not looking forward to seeing it, but all I could say is "Well I hope its not that bad"
JOSE MP SAYS: Transformers not an anime? Are you stupid or what?. Transformers IS an anime.
---------------------------------------
Well, I went through the trouble to present FACTS which illustrate why Transformers is not Anime. If you want to take the opposing view, the least you could do is include some of those yourself. Transformers is not Anime. It was written by Americans for Americans. If you think otherwise, you're going to have to make your case. Simply saying it is Anime does not make it true.
----------------------
JOSE MP: You actually have admitted you havent watched DB and DBZ, then why bash it?
----------------------
I never said I haven't watched any of it. Don't know where you got that impression, but I never said anything of the sort. Try again.
--------------
JOSE MP SAYS: Are you just saying that Brian Tyler (composer of many great scores), Stephen Chow
and many others like them who happen to be hardcore fans of Dragonball, are idiots with IQs below 40?.
----------------
Could be! They certainly are if, like you, they take that sentence literally.
--------------------
JOSEMP: From now on cinemablend will surely NOT BE my first choice when it comes to movie reviews, previews, etc. We should thank you for that.
-------------------
This was actually my goal, to try and weed out as many Dragonball Z fans as possible. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working, as you guys keep coming and posting. Baffling.
Thank you for actually discussing the content of Dragonball itself. No one before you thought to do that.
Christian, I would say that the popularity of Dragonball Z only explain why they're making a movie out of it. It doesn't mean that it's good. A lot of really terrible things are very popular. Which is why I mentioned American Idol above.
Chou, there are certainly talented people involved in making the movie... and maybe there are other versions of Dragonball which I haven't seen which content better story to make a movie from. From what I've seen of it though, it's a pretty flimsy thing to make a decent movie out of, no matter how talented these people are.
Ang, what do you think about the live action of Akira which is being made?
I really hate reviewer that doesn't know nothing about what they review or preview.
I'm from europe, actually I'm 29. I first saw dragon ball on french television when I was 13 and I have good memories about this show.
Like all american old kids have good memories about the transformers.
Compare Dragon Ball with Pokemon. It's like comparing Thundercats with inspector gadgets...no sense...
Your article insulte major fan kid or not with unprofessionnal purpose and your also damaging a movie image without any official content.
Learn the lesson, I doesn't watch Naruto, I don't like it, maybe because I'm to old for that kind of stuff now, but I will never trash it just because I saw 3 pictures and 10 secondes.
Dragon ball Z is (for me) the only anim that doesn't copy other anime and remember me lot of comics stuff. Sangoku, the hero remember me a lot the story line of Superman.
The android saga remember me the story line of terminator. It's also a lot of sci-fi stuff. They are many stupid things but they are many great idea that you should learn after all the following comments.
So yes, this could be a really great live action movie. Just like Spiderman, X-men, Hell boy or whatever superpowered stuff you've watch.
Dragon Ball Z, it's all about fight and entertainment à la matrix style. Like Transformers is all about fighting robot. It's simple as that.
Talking about something you didn't know is truly unprofessional. Be cool and be more kind with your readers.
Kevin Smith will easily kill for this kind of no sense preview you know ;)
You remember me people that trash the sci-fi serie Farscape after 10 secondes just because they are muppets in there...
As a fan of dragonball z I will say this your right about one thing... This movie should not be made! It will be total crap, I don't give a crap what the special effects look like. I know the story plot and it's complete garbage, but ease up friend all anime is'nt bad. I loved akira! Maybe you would be more interested in something a little more mature. Sure dragonball z can be a little kiddy at times, but try the more adult titles like Karas1 as a matter of fact try that one... KARAS the Prophecy. I promise you'll like that one, and there is a sequel that concludes the movie KARAS the Revelation. If you don't like those then maybe you really don't like anime which is cool too, It's not for everyone.
"Dragonball isn't that a big deal when the entire plot of the entire series is just about fighting."
Okay, you clearly haven't read any of the mangas or watched DB or DBZ thoroughly. Once you have watched and seen at least every episode, come back here and talk.
It's a manga/show about the classic battles between good vs evil, granted there will be a lot fighting. Especially when the fighting is revolved around Martial Arts.
You don't know shit, and neither does the previewer. Not saying you can't have your own opinions but it's clear you people don't know the first thing to the DB series.
So since you seem so sure of yourself JoshT, I would very much like you to elaborate on what exactly Dragonball (and Z) has to make up for? What exactly are your criticisms of the series as a whole, and what sort of evidence from the episodes you have seen enforce these criticisms?
At the moment, you seem to be just making broad assertions with no proof to back them up.
No. This preview isn't about Dragonball Z. It's about Dragonball the movie. I'll save a diatribe on how and why Dragonball Z sucks for a rant in our TV section at some other time.
I'm very well aware that your original post isn't about Dragonball (and Z) as a TV series, however, from what I could extract out of your OP, it appears as though you are placing a very large burden on Dragonball (as a movie franchise) to succeed critically and financially *because* of the problems you have with the original series.
You appear to express severe distaste at the very premises the movie is planted upon. You have gone so far as to question elements of a movie, which you hold little knowledge about at this moment in time. To come up with such vociferous criticisms you must be making at least be making a substantial reference to elements of the series.
It is for this reason that I think that a discussion of the series is most appropriate in this set of circumstances (i.e. given that this is a preview).
The only people I know who like Dragonball are 8 year old boys and 28 year old anime fanboys.
Neither of which are an appealing demograph for creating a good cinematic movie.
Of course, as with all fanboys they take great offense at being called fanboys and simply assume that everyone should keep their opinions to themselves or waste a year of their lives "educating" themselves before being "allowed" to have an opinion.
I'm sure the 8 year olds will just like the flashy lights and silly dragon fights instead of crying over faithfulness to the 500 episode story arc of the OVA/BBC/FU2 or the fact that nobody else likes their silly cartoons.
Ok first off since obviously nobody decided to actually depict the plot of the actual Dragonball/Z/GT series it goes as is:
Pretty much there are 7 legendary dragonballs spread out throughout earth that once collected a dragon appears and grants the user one wish of anything he may choose.
Then we have Goku, one of the last of a dying breed of Saiyans that crashes down to earth and is raised by his martials arts master/grandpa Master Roshi. Throughtout Goku's stay on earth many "evil" people try to collect the dragonballs to be able to become all powerfull or be invincible and Goku, his witty and sarcastic persona, and his team must assemble to fight off the evils of the universe and keep earth safe.
Although the dragonballs have been used to bring people back to life and for other uses the main desire for the collection of them is generally for evil use. Throughout the series they run into several different enemies and gain different powers to become stronger, hence Super Saiyan, Fusions, and Changing Forms, which although arent introduced untill later variations of the early dragonball series, are still fun to watch. I still remember the first time i saw Goku so Super Saiyan.
In later series they end up going to other planets and across the universe and discover other dragonballs that exist as well that take them on even more journeys with even stronger villians.
Now if this guy really wants to hate on Dragonball then that can be his choice, hes not writing a review hes just saying how much he thinks a movie will suck about a show he obviously knew nothing about given the fact that he couldnt even get the right name of the series their using for the movie when he first posted his P-review.
One more thing, i doubt you have actually seen an Dragonball show sometime within the last 10 years, i could be wrong since i dont watch it that faithfully within the same time span. But the most prominent of the episodes that come on are Dragonball Z or Drangonball GT. Not the original Dragonball series.
And im not going over this to check for spelling or grammar errors, so if you try to get back at me please find something to nit pick at other than the fact a didnt use a spell check, its immature.
Well, as I see it Josh, I agree do agree with you to a point. There are a lot of anime the would be considered crap by most adults. Key word "ADULTS". As adults, we aren't always able to enjoy or understand the pure fun of certain anime, simply because it makes no sense to us. That doesn't always means it's crap. A lot of these shows are geared towards kids and kids only. It just so happens that some of us actually enjoy DBZ for what it is, fun and action. Sure the stories may suck but, that's never been what DBZ was ever about. Except for maybe, "The History of Trunks". I thought it had a fairly good story and a dramatic feel considering the reputation the show had developed. With that being said, if the makers of the movie want it to be successful, they're going to have to modify the story so that the adults who take their kids to see it can actually enjoy it, too.
First things first, when I was a little kid I would come home and watch DBZ.It waz the best!!So let me give you a few pionters,Bulma had blue fucking hair!,Goku wasnt a scrawny white boy!Now Chi-Chi yall nailed perfectly,Master Roshi is ok the only thing he needs 2 do is shave his head and grow a white humungous goatee.
Just wanted to piont out this is a dragonball movie not dragonball z.
In dragonball Goku wasnt beefy at all, if anything he was kinda on the scrawny side.
Wow, I love how all the Dragonball fans are here to bash the fact that you say it's stupid. Guys, the movie hasn't come out yet, and he said that he was willing to give the movie a chance...even though I'm pretty sure it's going to suck. The story line in Dragonball isn't compelling at all whatsoever, because it uses the same stupid formula over and over again. It's right up there with power rangers (which also had a movie btw, you might enjoy it). I used to watch Dragonball as a kid, and I watched power rangers too, and looking back I think it's hilarious that I ever enjoyed it. And yes, American Idol is trash as well, although not as bad as Laguna Beach.

Sp your excitement level for this is so low because you hate anime especially this one?
Huh dragonball is the coolest anime ever created. It destroys transformers cartoon in kickass and cool factor.
Sorry but dragonball rules.
