 Ben “Finn” Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a good-natured, surf bum-turned-treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary 18th century Queen’s Dowry—40 chests of exotic treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson) and his more-rusty-than-trusty salvage boat, “Booty Calls.” Just as Tess has begun to rebuild her life, working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure’s whereabouts. Certain that his luck will change with the newfound information, Finn maneuvers himself aboard Nigel’s yacht and, using his good-natured charm, convinces the tycoon and his Blackberry-wielding, celebutante daughter, Gemma (Alexis Dziena), to join him in the pursuit of the Spanish treasure. Against Tess’ better judgment, the search rekindles her love…of discovery. But they are not the only ones after the treasure. Finn’s mentor-turned-nemesis Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) has also set out to claim the prize. Let the treasure hunt begin…  The formula rom-com has been applied to the formula treasure hunting movie, and the result is some sort of theatrical black hole. It's like they came up with this thing by simply combining McConaughey's last two noteworthy movies. Sahara and whatever forgettable rom-com he was last in with Kate Hudson. At least the movie’s title is appropriate. When he worked in television Andy Tennant was one of the small screen’s best directors, working on great shows like The Wonder Years, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose (Kubiak!), The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (Bruuce!), and Sliders. Since moving to film, he’s directed Fool’s Rush In, and a bunch of rom-com garbage. Yeah, I’m including Hitch in that. So I guess it’s appropriate that Tennant has been teamed with stars like McConaughey and Hudson, who themselves seem to do little more than rom-com garbage these days. At least McConaughey has a few gems like Frailty on his resume, Kate Hudson hasn’t done anything good since Almost Famous. Why is Kate Hudson famous again? It must have something to do with her mother.
