America's favorite feline, Garfield, follows his owner, Jon, to England. The U.K. may never recover, as Garfield is mistaken for a look-alike, regal cat who has inherited a castle. Garfield savors the royal treatment afforded by his loyal subjects, but his reign is in jeopardy. The nefarious Lord Dargis is determined to do away with Garfield, so he can turn the castle into a resort.

What's really amazing about Garfield's A Tale of Two Kitties is that it even exists. The first Garfield film came and went from theaters without much real media notice, so you might assume it was a flop. You would be wrong. On June 11th 2004 Garfield: The Movie only managed to open at number four, but it did so with a hefty $21 million take. These days we're lucky if the weekend's number one movie does that much. Over the next few weeks Garfield continued to do steady, if not immediately eye-popping business to make a grand total of $75 million domestically, enough to guarantee it a sequel since the film was made on an only $50 million budget.

How did Garfield, a movie which no one even seemed to notice and which critics almost universally panned do it? It was 2004 people. A banner year for Hollywood, even the worst movies made money hand over fist. But we're living in a post-2005 world now, where studios are facing theoretically pickier audiences and also in theory, should be moving towards fiscal responsibility. Success is not so easily achieved. Would the first Garfield make that much money in 2005 or 2006? I doubt it. For Garfield 2 Fox is probably hoping for big DVD sales to carry the film into the realm of profitability.

Will it be any good? If the first one wasn't, there's no reason for this one to be. But, on the other hand, if you're one of the few who did notice the original and actually liked it, then you're set. The sequel takes all the elements from the first movie and does them again… except in Europe. It's a tried and true sequel formula, used primarily on, well, sequelizing bad movies. Enjoy it.
